This 25 hour course is a Dental Board of California approved educational program for dentists looking to apply for an Oral Conscious Sedation for Adult Patients Permit in the state of California.

Getting Started with Sedation; Drugs and Techniques
Etiology of Dental Anxiety & Comparison of Techniques
- Historical, philisophical and psychological aspects of anxiety and pain control
Pharmacology 101
- Description of the stages of pharmacokinetics (what the body does to drugs) and pharmacodynamics (what drugs do to the body) with special emphasis on the distinction between conscious sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia
Applied Physiology & Anatomy of Respiration
- Review of adult and pediatric respiratory and circulatory physiology and related anatomy, with emphasis on establishing and maintaining a patent airway in the adult patient
Inhalational Anxiolysis and Sedation
Nitrous Oxide Equipment and Installation
- Description and use of inhalational sedation equipment
Demonstration and Clinic - Incremental Inhalational Technique
Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Pharmacology
- Indications and contraindications for use of enteral and/or combination inhalational-enterconscious sedation (combined conscious sedation)
Nitrous Oxide Complications/Contraindications
- Discussion of hallucinatory effects and abuse potential
Second Demonstration and Clinic - Rapid Induction Inhalational Technique
- Review of dental procedures possible under enteral and/or combination inhalational-enteral conscious sedation
Contamination and Scavanging
- Introduction to potential health hazards of trace anesthetics and proposed techniques for limiting occupational exposure and potential abuse problems

Combination Inhalational-Oral Sedation
Pharmacology of Oral Sedatives
- Pharmacology of agents used in enteral and/or combined conscious sedation, including drug interactions, incompatibilitites and adverse reactions
Oral Sedation Protocols
- Patient evaluation and selection through a review of the medical history, physical assessment, and medical consultation
- Airway evaluation, baseline vital statistics, informed consent and pre-sedation instructions
- Indications and contraindications for the utilization of age-appropriate oral conscious sedation in dental patients

Live Patient Experience
- Preoperative management
- When and how to administer the sedative medication
- Patient physiologic monitoring
- Post-op Analgesia and Pain Control
Practical management and pharmacological strategies in the treatment of anxiety and pain

Keeping Sedation Safe and Effective; Monitoring and Emergencies
Reversal Agents and Flumazenil
Patient Assessment and Monitoring
- Patient monitoring during all satages of treatment using observation and monitoring equipment, with particular attention to vital signs, reflexes realted to consciousness and airway management
- Prevention, recognition and management of complications and life-threatening situations
Emergency Kits
Dental Emergencies
- Hypotension, hypertension, respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, altered consciousness, seizures, drug overdose reactions, chest pain, stroke, and allergic reactions
Drug Interactions and Informatics Databases
Putting It All Together on Monday for Your Patients and Staff
Oral Sedation Techniques Including "Politics", Rules and Regulations
- Importance of maintaining proper records with accurate chart entries recording medical history, physical examination, vital signs (both baseline and intermittent), drugs administered, patient response, informed consent, recovery and discharge criteria.
- DEA regulations for medication storage and prescription writing
Final Case Studies and Review
